Early Season Fly Fishing in Southwest Montana

The Four Most Important Practices for Spring Fishing

           Frequent Depth Changes

Spring fishing success often comes down to finding the right depth. As water temperatures fluctuate throughout the day, trout will adjust their position in the water column. Early in the morning, when temperatures are colder, fish tend to hold deeper, conserving energy in slower-moving water. As the day warms, they may move up to feed in shallower areas, particularly if insects begin hatching. Regularly adjusting your weight, indicator placement, or leader length ensures your flies stay in the strike zone, increasing your chances of hooking up. Change your depth before you change your flies, often times the first rig you choose to throw will work great if it is at the right depth, the fish are not very picky this time of year!

           Color Matching to the Weather

The weather in early spring is unpredictable, and the light conditions on any given day can greatly impact which fly colors are most effective. On bright, sunny days, natural, lighter-colored flies tend to blend in better with the surroundings, making them a more realistic choice. On overcast days or in stained water, darker or flashier patterns help create contrast, making it easier for fish to spot your flies. Think of it like choosing the right clothing for the conditions—sometimes subtle is best, while other times, you need something that stands out. Paying attention to cloud cover, water clarity, and light penetration will help you dial in the perfect color combination for success.

           Being Hatch Aware

Spring marks the start of some of the most exciting insect activity of the year, and staying aware of what’s hatching can make or break your day on the water. Early-season hatches like midges, blue-winged olives, and skwala stoneflies often bring trout to the surface, but they won’t rise for just anything. Observing the water for emerging insects, paying attention to fish behavior, and having the right imitations on hand can mean the difference between an average day and a banner day. Even when trout aren’t visibly rising, subsurface nymphs that match the active hatch can be highly effective. If you’re seeing fish keying in on a specific bug, switching to a proper imitation will always improve your odds.

           Keeping Things Simple

With rapidly changing conditions and unpredictable weather, it’s easy to get caught up in making constant adjustments. While adaptability is important, overcomplicating your setup can sometimes work against you. Spring fishing success often comes from sticking with a few proven patterns, adjusting presentation rather than endlessly swapping flies. Keep a simple selection of reliable nymphs, streamers, and dries that match common spring hatches, and focus on reading the water instead of second-guessing your fly box. Sometimes, the best approach is to fish with confidence and let the fish tell you what’s working.

This January, Gallatin River Guides traded icy Montana winters for the lush, tropical landscapes of Colombia’s Vichada province. Our destination: the Tomo River, a pristine tributary of the Orinoco River and one of the most renowned peacock bass fisheries in the world. Known for its vibrant ecosystem and legendary population of trophy peacock bass, the Tomo is a bucket-list destination for adventurous anglers. These fish are as aggressive as they are stunning, boasting vivid greens, golds, and bold black patterns. Their explosive strikes and relentless fights test both skill and stamina, offering an exhilarating challenge that makes every cast unforgettable.

Our journey began in Bogotá, Colombia, where we hopped on a charter flight to the remote town of La Primavera. From there, we embarked on a rugged 4-hour adventure in 4x4 vehicles to reach the river. The final leg of the trip was a 30-minute boat ride downstream to our campsite. The accommodations were nothing short of remarkable—floating tents designed for two, complete with full bathrooms and electricity. Having such comfort and convenience in a remote jungle setting was truly mind-blowing and added an unexpected touch of luxury to an otherwise wild and raw experience.

           What Is Streamer Fishing?

Fishing in Montana is already legendary, but few experiences match the sheer excitement of casting streamers on iconic rivers like the Yellowstone, Madison, or Missouri. Whether you’re a newcomer to fly fishing or an experienced angler, streamer fishing offers a thrilling challenge with the potential for a big payout: landing large, aggressive fish. This technique involves using larger flies that mimic baitfish, other trout, and leeches to tap into a trout's predatory instincts. It’s an approach that can attract the biggest and most aggressive fish in the river—especially brown trout, renowned for their ferocious strikes.

Streamer fishing stands out because it requires anglers to adopt a more dynamic, engaging style of fishing. Unlike other fly fishing techniques that rely on subtle presentations, casting and stripping streamers can feel more like hunting, actively seeking out the river's apex predators.

            What You Need:

           Essential Gear for Streamer Fishing

When targeting larger, aggressive fish, your gear needs to be up to the task. Here’s a breakdown of what to bring:

            Rod:

You’ll want a rod with enough backbone to handle big fish and cast heavier flies all day. Most anglers go with a 6- or 7-weight rod for streamer fishing. These provide the perfect balance of power and versatility for tossing larger patterns while maintaining control during fights with hefty fish.

            Line:

Having both floating and sinking lines at your disposal is key, especially when fishing different water depths throughout the year. If you’re limited to floating line, bring some sinking leaders or a sink tip to help your flies get down where the fish are.

            Tippet:

Forget finesse—you’ll want heavy tippet for streamers. Stick with 0x to 2x tippet to avoid break-offs when big fish strike hard. And if you're using floating line, keep your leader short. A 7.5-foot fluorocarbon leader should do the trick, making casting and handling large streamers easier.

            Fly Selection:

Streamer fishing requires a diverse arsenal. Be sure to stock up on different sizes, patterns, and colors to adapt to changing water conditions and trout preferences. One effective rule of thumb is to match your fly color to the sky: sunny days call for bright, flashy colors like yellow or white, while overcast days require darker, more natural hues like olive or black.

Some key baitfish you’ll want to imitate include sculpin, dace, and juvenile whitefish or trout. Don’t be afraid to throw big flies—trout can surprise you with the size of streamer they’ll attack!

            When to Go:

           Timing Your Fishing for Success

Late September marks the beginning of one of the most exciting times for streamer fishing in Montana. As the weather cools and days shorten, the fall fishing season kicks into high gear, and this is when trophy brown trout become especially aggressive. The end of September through October is prime time for anglers targeting these fish, as brown trout prepare for their annual spawn. Their pre-spawn aggression makes them more territorial and hungry, often leading them to strike at larger streamers with little hesitation.

The cooler water temperatures in early fall help create ideal conditions, encouraging trout to leave their deeper summer holds and move into shallower, more accessible spots where they’re easier to target. During this period, streamer fishing can be particularly productive, as the trout’s instinct to bulk up before spawning makes them less picky about what they eat. Big browns are on the hunt, feeding voraciously on smaller fish, and they’re more likely to attack large baitfish imitations, making this the perfect time for streamer anglers to chase that fish-of-a-lifetime.

If you’re looking for a shot at landing one of Montana’s legendary trophy browns, now is the time to hit the water. Focus on early mornings and late afternoons, when fish are most active, and make sure to cover plenty of water—these aggressive fish won’t be waiting in the same spots you’d typically find them during other times of the year.

Streamer fishing isn’t just about technique—it’s about understanding the behavior of large, aggressive fish and adapting to conditions as they change. By equipping yourself with the right gear, fly patterns, and timing, you can increase your odds of hooking that elusive trophy fish. So grab your rod, load up your fly box, and hit the water—Montana’s trophy trout are waiting!

There is no better indicator as to when springtime has arrived than warm sunny days and blanket caddis hatches. After a long winter here in Big Sky, and one final week of heavy snow paired with cold temps, we are excited to announce that better weather and heavy hatches are here!

While the Caddis are not necessarily the first hatch to happen, they are certainly one of the most exciting. Before we see the Caddis emerge, we have some very productive midge and baetis hatches that give anglers a fun break from the winter program of being cold, fishing with nymphs, and wishing it were summer! Getting to fish a good Blue Winged Olive (baetis) hatch is a wonderful experience but on our rivers we don't usually see blanket hatches like we do with the Mother's Day Caddis. While the name is fun, the hatch rarely ever happens right on Mother's Day, however, this year it was pretty darn close!

The Lower Madison River is home to some of the warmest weather and earliest hatches in Southwest Montana, and is usually where you begin to see Caddis show up first. The Yellowstone River can be host to some epic hatches as well but can be extremely tricky to time because of unpredictable spring weather and the beginning of runoff. With the Lower Madison being a tailwater, it is much more protected during runoff and can be dependable for great hatches.

When the water temperatures are consistently getting into the 52-54 degree Fahrenheit range, the adults will start to hatch and with that the feeding frenzy of trout begins. Having flies that cover all life stages of the Caddis: larvae, pupa, and adult is very important because at different times of day, the fish will be feeding on one or all life stages of this insect. When the hatch is first starting the dry fly fishing can be limited as most fish are feeding on emergers so it is always great to pair up a larvae and pupa pattern to start. In the afternoons and evenings are when the dry fly fishing can be the best because of the large number of adult caddisflies and females that are returning to the river to lay eggs.

With those flies in the box you will have the bases covered when it comes to fishing the Mother's Day Caddis hatch. The spring hatch is already rolling and there are a few other bugs that have joined the mix. In Southwest Montana we have multiple species of Caddisflies that will hatch throughout the summer all the way into October. Having multiple colors and sizes of the same fly will keep you finding success even when it is a different type of Caddis that is hatching. The specific pattern you throw is not the biggest concern but making sure you closely pair size and color to what the fish are actually eating will make your efforts more effective.

This year Gallatin River Guides started a Summer Film Series to highlight a few of our favorite things that happen out West in the summertime! We currently have two episodes released of our four episode series. Our first episode follows a couple of our guides on the Madison and Gallatin River during one of the most famous hatches we experience in Southwest Montana, the Salmonfly hatch. The Salmonfly hatch is when the largest bugs in the river are flying around and the largest trout in the river are looking up and wanting to eat monster dry flies! For our second episode of the series we return to the Madison and Gallatin Rivers for some heat of the summer nymphing. Even when things start to get technical at the end of July, our rivers can be host to some wonderful fishing trips. If these sound awesome but you haven't had a chance to watch them or didn't know about them, head over to our

The beginning of July usually starts with a bang out here in Southwest Montana. The salmonfly hatch let's us know that summer is in full swing and gives anglers the rare opportunity of using large dry flies to target our favorite fish. There really is nothing quite like seeing a flying burrito slap down on the surface of the river and then a healthy fish come up with no hesitation and smash that bug. Over to the right we have the result of just that!

           Today's Tip: Casting

One of the most challenging aspects of fly-fishing is mastering the delivery system, or casting. Giving a good presentation that results in a fish eating your flies stems from putting them in exactly the right spot. Different situations call for different methods of casting.

Utilizing these casting techniques while on the water can help streamline your fly delivery system and increase your success rate on the water.

           Roll Cast:

This method is commonly used when you have tight cover from trees or bushes right behind you and can keep you from losing flies on your back cast if you were to use a regular overhead cast. The roll cast uses water tension to put a flex into your rod and allows you to turn the line over on itself out in front of you to cast your flies forwards.

           Water Tension Cast:

Another technique that is commonly used when your back cast is limited by heavy cover. For this cast we use the current of the river to pull all the line downriver of where we are attempting to cast. You then use the drag of the current against the line to put a bend into your rod while moving your rod in the direction you are casting and then finish pointing at your designated target and using the flex of your rod to launch your line and rig to your target.

           The Double Haul:

A more advanced addition onto your typical overhead cast that can be extremely helpful in high wind situations and getting more distance into your cast. An angler will use their non dominant hand to pull line in the opposite direction they are moving their rod in. During your back cast, the non dominant hand pulls line forwards and during your forward cast your non dominant hand pulls line back towards your body and downwards. This added motion in the line will create a more significant bend in your rod and allow you to tap into more power through loading your rod more than normal.

Fishing in the Park opened this Saturday, May 27! We could not be more stoked about the first week of fishing opportunities in the park! If you decide to head into the park, make sure you have bear spray, are fishing lead free, barbless flies, and leave the felt soled boots at home.

You can expect to be seeing some consistent White Miller Caddis, Salmonflies, and Pale Morning Duns starting to ramp up this week. The salmonflies might not be coming out just yet so have some rubberlegs ready to nymph with. The Firehole is holding a nice color right now and fishing well...

Currently, the river is holding a lot color in all sections, Quake Lake is entirely brown due to sediment being deposited by Cabin and Beaver Creek. The only clear water right now is going to be between the lakes. The dam at Hebgen has been consistently raising flows and the Madison River is moving fast and high in all sections. Be sure to wade with caution and only leave the bank when you are sure of the depth you are walking out into...

Spring time fishing comes with a lot of variability, choosing what fly to use and when or how to use it is no easy challenge this time of year! The Spring brings big temperature swings and conditions that change at the snap of a finger. Despite constantly changing weather and water flows that provide us with some challenging conditions, there are great angling opportunities this time of year.

Having the right flies in the box is the first step to success during your trips to the river this time of year. Here are our tips for making sure your box has the right stuff:

           Look at water clarity:

-Use larger, dark colored patterns that have some movement when the water is murky. Flies like a Pat's Rubber Legs in sizes 8 through 12 in colors like Black, Brown, or Coffee usually get the trick done!

Look for bugs on the surface of the water, in the air, or in the bushes:

-Even when the water is murky in the Spring, fish can key in on emerging and hatched bugs like mayflies, caddis, and stoneflies. Checking the bushes for caddis, the rocks beside the water for stonefly husks, and the surface of the water for freshly hatched mayflies can give some important information as to what the fish are looking for on that day.

-Start with the earlier life stages of bugs, then work your way into emergers, and then on to dry flies. It is important to have every life stage of mayflies, caddis, and stoneflies right now.

Swing by our shop for the latest river info:

It is officially Springtime up here in Big Sky, Montana. We are excited to be headed into another great summer of legendary fly fishing! While this winter was a long one, we are happy to have mountains that are full of snow and ready to give us full rivers.

Currently, the river is holding a little bit of color in all sections, the clearest section of river is going to be above the West Fork. These warm temps have given us some great t-shirt weather but also provided the rivers with mud. Downriver of Ennis is holding a lot of color right now and will most likely continue to get murkier with the rain in the forecast…

It has been a long winter here in Montana, but things are starting to look up, as we have already had some warmer spring days before this last snowstorm. The warmer days have brought more consistent fishing and more eager fish. If you have been in the area lately or are monitoring the hydrographs, you would see that the river has been getting a little high and murky. This is our first taste of runoff…
